Selling Your Home – Does It Have The “Aah” Factor?

20th September 2015

Image of tranquil river in France with trees bordering the river

I have been visiting a friend in France and had a wonderful time (despite the weather!) catching up with friends, eating and drinking and visiting new places. A couple of those places were on a river and one day as my friend and I sat enjoying a chocolat chaud overlooking a pretty river and watching the world go by I was reminded of the quote from the poem Leisure by William Henry Davies “What is this life, if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare”. It also struck me how important it is that our homes feel tranquil.

We all lead very busy lives these days – work, family, chores and socialising etc and at times it can all feel a bit much and we become stressed and frazzled. Our homes are an important place where we can get away from it all and breathe, we come in from work, change our clothes, put our slippers on and sit down with a glass of wine. When potential buyers enter your home you want them to go “aah” and breathe a big sigh of relaxation. I remember an episode of Location Location Location when the buyer explained wanting to feel that the house was giving him a hug – what a fantastic way to describe it.

So how do you create that feeling of tranquility ? Here are a few tips:-

  • Colour – decor needs to be neutral – no bright primary colours – although that does not mean it has to be bland. Use different shades and add accents in accessories.
  • Texture – Soft warm textures such as wool and velvet are perfect for snuggling up with especially with the nights drawing in. Imagine curling up with a cosy throw, resting your feet on a sheepskin rug etc
  • Lighting – lighting is very important for creating a restful atmosphere. You need lighting to be practical for tasks such as cooking or reading but include mood lighting in the form of table lamps, dimmer switches and even candles.

When considering creating the relaxing feel don’t forget the garden. Try to have a sitting area in a quiet corner and a water feature is perfect for adding that air of calm.
